LOUDNESS, the legendary Japanese metal band, is gearing up for a new album release this year, marking a significant milestone in their 45-year career. Singer Minoru Niihara and guitarist Akira Takasaki revealed during the Tuska festival in Helsinki that they have an impressive 30 songs already written for the upcoming album, with plans to record and release a selection of these tracks. This news comes as a thrilling update for fans, especially considering the band's rich history and the special significance of their 45th anniversary.
The band's latest album, 'Sunburst', was released in 2021 and was a double studio album, a first for LOUDNESS. It was a celebration of their musical journey, with 16 songs written primarily by Takasaki and mostly sung in Japanese. The album's release outside Japan in 2022 further solidified the band's international appeal, building upon their early success in the 1980s.
LOUDNESS' journey began in 1981, and they quickly made their mark on the global metal scene. They were the first Japanese band to tour North America and Europe in 1983, and the following year, they became the first Japanese act to sign with an international record label, Atlantic Records. Their breakthrough moment came when they opened for MÖTLEY CRÜE and played at Madison Square Garden, further cementing their place in metal history.
The band's lineup has evolved over the years, with Niihara, Takasaki, and bassist Masayoshi Yamashita being the only original members. The current incarnation also includes drummer Masayuki Suzuki, who joined in 2009. Unfortunately, the original drummer, Munetaka Higuchi, passed away in 2008 after a battle with liver cancer.
Niihara's departure from the band in 1988 led to a brief period with American singer Mike Vescera, followed by the recruitment of Masaki Yamada. However, in 2001, Takasaki reunited the original LOUDNESS lineup, including Niihara, Yamashita, and Higuchi. This reunion marked a significant moment in the band's history, bringing back the original chemistry and sound.
The announcement of a new album is a testament to LOUDNESS' enduring legacy and their ability to evolve while staying true to their roots. With 30 songs already written, the band is poised to create another masterpiece, offering fans a glimpse into their creative process and the depth of their musical talent. As the album's release date approaches, fans can anticipate a thrilling addition to the band's extensive discography, further solidifying their place in the metal pantheon.
